Bad breath is a rather taboo subject but a common problem that can affect anyone. Bad breath can be caused by a number of things – poor oral hygiene, spicy or strongly flavoured foods, alcohol, smoking, gum disease, or a dry mouth (xerostomia) due a reduction in saliva production. This can be due to trouble breathing, taking certain medicines, or salivary gland disease. Advancing age also tends to reduce saliva production and this can lead to dramatic increases in decay levels. Infections of nose, throat, sinuses and lungs, plus diabetes and liver or kidney problems can also cause bad breath.

Should we find your mouth to be healthy we may refer you to your GP for further investigation into the cause of your bad breath. This treatment is normally for patients new to Lander and at your initial visit to our Fresh Breath Clinic you will meet our hygiene team and receive a calm, kind and reassuring discussion of your problem. We will examine your medical, social and dietary history, undertake a full examination and assessment and provide a treatment plan. Our hygienists will give you thorough scaling and polishing and you will take home a personalised Lander Oral Health bag with items recommended by our hygiene team.

Further visits may be necessary and in the event of active periodontal disease being diagnosed you will be referred back to your dentist for further treatment to be considered.
